St. Mary's University Updates: January 2019

Next Steps Events

Throughout the month of February, we will be travelling around Nova Scotia to offer Next Steps sessions. These events help students and families prepare for their Saint Mary's University experience by covering important dates and deadlines, living on campus and applying for residence, and how to prepare for the first year of university. We will discuss the many ways students can finance their university education and demystify the process of applying for different types of funding, such as student loans, scholarships, and bursaries.

All events start at 7:00 PM and registration is available through smu.ca/events. Please see the below community event dates for our Next Steps Events:

Winter Open House

Our Winter 2019 Open House is taking place onSaturday, March 2nd. A campus open house is a wonderful way for students to get a feel for the university they’re considering. We welcome all high school students, especially Grade 12 students, to attend our open house if they’re considering Saint Mary’s as their post-secondary destination. Students will have an opportunity to interact with professors and university staff, as well as receive guided campus tours and of course apply on the spot (waived fee).

Students should RSVP to this event by registering online at smu.ca/events.

My Transcript

For students in the public school system, we strongly encourage them to provide us with their provincial student ID number as well as consent to retrieve their transcripts electronically through the My Transcript system. This has already reduced the amount of work involved for students, counsellors, and the admissions team when finalizing an application. It has also greatly reduced the amount of time it takes for a decision to be made on an application.

The only time we will ask for a printed transcript is for on-the-spot admission.

Application and Scholarship Deadlines

All students who want to be considered for entrance scholarships must submit their application before March 1, 2019. We will still accept applications for admission up until September 1, 2019; however, these applicants will not be offered scholarships.

Named Entrance Awards: Saint Mary’s University offers Named Entrance Awards in addition to our Renewable Entrance Awards. Our Named Entrance Awards require a separate application and supporting documents, including letters of reference and an essay. Students must have their applications and all required documents submitted before March 1, 2019.

We will be hosting a Scholarship Writing Workshop on Friday, February 1st, 2019. We will cover the types of accomplishments and activities to include in scholarship applications and the various kinds of scholarships we offer. Staff from the Saint Mary’s University Writing Centre will then help students write the essay component of their scholarship application, which can then be used for external scholarship applications. Parents and supporters are also invited to attend, as we will be hosting a Money Matters session for them while their students are working on their essays.

Students are required to register for this event by visiting smu.ca/events.

Academic Exploration Visits

There are still dates available for our Academic Exploration Visits (formerly Interactive Campus Tours). Visits include lunch, a tour of campus, and a presentation or workshop catered to the group. A great opportunity to supplement classroom learning with activities organized by faculty researching subjects connected to your high school curriculum. Transportation can also be provided, free of charge. Contact Nina Maric at to book.
